Race Report 30/05/19

5 Harriers were among the thousands at the London Marathon at the weekend, on a near ideal morning for running.  As ever, the support and enthusiasm of the crowd was inspiring, and all were happy with their performance.  Ken Wood achieved and excellent 3.15.56, Andy Butcher 4.18.18, Trish Radford 4.25.55, Clare Tempest 4.33.47 and David Tervit 5.09.20.  A superb set of results.

Although the Blakey Blitz Fell Race isn’t as long – 11 miles – its total ascent, 2630 ft, including 3 tough hills, makes it every bit as challenging, and none of the club’s ladies were inclined to do it!  It was a cool calm morning, and the course included grassy slopes, slim heather tracks, bogs  and 3 tough hills, with a hard uphill slog of a mile to the finish!  This was the 11th and last race in the Dave Parry Winter Series, and Josh Cooper was first club finisher out of a field of 114, 33rd in 106.23, Brett Edgeworth 42nd in 110.22, Marc Davies 66th in 118.34, 4 minutes quicker than last time, and the only one of the group to have done the race before and Alan Simpson 72nd in 121.32.

Park Runs by comparison are, well, a walk in the park, and Lorraine Hiles continued her super form at Fountains Abbey, running at almost 82% to come 45th in 21.49, Gary Wilkinson 49th in 21.27, just a second outside his PB, Adrian Saunders 82nd in 23.27, Paul Bradford 93rd in 24.08, Linda Bamforth 259th in 31.08 and Paul Adams 286th out of 379 in 32.13.

Four members were in Scotland.  At Meadowhill, Edinburgh, Mike Cropper had another stormer to come 2nd out of 70 in 20.13 and Jemma Cropper was 60th in 34.48.

Ian and Marian Codlingwere at Hazelhead Aberdeen, with Ian 189th out of 203 in 41.30, over a course wich was steadily uphill on woodland trails on the way out and down on the way back.  Marian came 192nd in 42.31.

Rosie Gatenby was among the 178 finishers at the 3rd running of the Morecambe event, coming 98th in 29.24.

Mid week saw a large contingent turn out for the Easter Handicap, based on time trials over the term.  The ever-competitive Hilary Coventry was first finisher, with equally competitive junior runner, Juliet Morrice 2nd and Wendy Bennett 3rd.  Nibbles and sociables followed, with a chocolate egg for all finishers and helpers.   Thankyou to Duncan Fothergill for sorting this.

At the recent Ben Campbell races, Ken Evitt was 2nd finisher in the 5k event in 27.53 – well done Ken.

In the 10k, the superb Tom Levi was 3rd out of 112 in 39.37, Esther Harrison 31st in 50.58, Gary Wilkinson 37th in 52.19, just ahead of Alan Simpson 38th in 52.28, Kirsty Naylor 49th in 58.22, Sarah Harrison 70th in 62.39, Faith Coy 76th in 64.34, Sue Low 106th in 74.48 and Lianne Robinson 107th in 74.51.
