Race Report 29/10/19

The latest Club Championship race, the normally testing but benign multi-terrain Whixley 10k, had a sting in the tail this year – mud – after several hours of heavy and persistent rain. Where there was mud on the course made for difficult going, but, as ever, first club finisher, Stephan Tomaszewski coped well, coming 15th out of 160, and 2nd M55, in 41.41, with Mike Cropper 16th in 42.38.  Esther Harrison was 2nd lady finisher, 26th in 45.12, Rob Burn 31st, and 2nd M60, in 45.59.  Lorraine Hiles was 3rd lady, 1st F50, in 46.38, Andy Butcher 38th in 47.02, Tom Watson 39th in 47.10, David Tervit 46th in 48.00, Kirsty Naylor 47th in 48.20, Pete Jackson 54th in 49.35, Gary Wilkinson 62nd in 51.23, Hilary Coventry 64th in 51.45, Helen Ashworth 85th in 54.43, Jill Libby 92nd in 55.50, Rosie Gatenby 104th in 57.37, Alison Butcher 121st in 60.27, Christine Burn, struggling to get back after injury, 154th in 75.53 and Marian Codling, happy to get round, 160th in 92.12, accompanied by
Gillian Crane, sweeper for the event.

The mud at Whixley was as nothing compared with the mud at the Gormire Gamble Fell Race over about 10k the previous weekend!  The mud at Whixley was on the level, but here, it was on serious ups and downs, which made for very difficult going in places.  Ken Wood was first home for the club, 32nd out of a massive 165 in 49.40, with Stephan Tomaszewski 35th, and again 2nd M55, in 50.20, just ahead of Olivia Mulligan, 36th in 50.28.  Esther Harrison came 52nd in 54.14, Rob Burn 54th, and 2nd M65, in 54.35, Alan Simpson 58th in 55.27, David Tervit 88th in 58.22, Kirsty Naylor 96th in 59.58, Marc Davies 98th in 60.24, Tom Watson 107th in 63.08, Jill Libby 134th in 68.07, Geoff Bullock 139th in 69.02, James Stephenson 152nd in 73.41, Richard Easby 158th in 83.51 and Alan Wikeley 163rd in 88.48.  The ladies’ team won 2nd prize. Congratulations to Gavin Coventry and his team for organising the race, and thanks to all the club members who marshalled on a damp, cold morning.

Numbers at Park Runs were generally down, partly because of the wet weather, but also because the England v New Zealand World Cup rugby semi final was being shown on TV!  At Fountains Abbey, Adrian Saunders came 44th out of 218 in 23.05, Molly Mayes 143rd in 29.31, Lorraine Hiles, leisurely for once, 200th in 35.55, Sharon Keegan 202nd in 35.57, equal with Diane Brown, and Nigel Morgan, acting as tail walker, 218th in 46.21.  Thanks to Rosie Gatenby for standing in the rain to zap finishers’ bar codes!

Tom Watson and Pete Jackson had their regular trip to the Millfield event, with Tom 12th in 23.16 and Pete 13th out of 58 in 23.27.  At Temple Newsham, Mike Cropper was a very good 5th out of 222 in 20.20 and Jemma Cropper 123rd in 31.05.  Liz Stephenson was 28th out of 31 at Ganavan Sands in 39.26, and at the Whinlatter Forest event, surely one of the toughest Park Run courses, serious ups and downs, as I suppose you might expect in the Lake District, faced Ian Crane, 65th out of 116 in 31.59, Martin Cummins 96th in 36.55, Jane Cummins 103rd in 41.23 and Gillian Crane 104th in 41.24 who all recorded much slower times than normal over the distance.
