Race Report 25/06/19

A very busy week for Harriers included a Harrogate League fixture, a fell race and a 109 mile relay, not to mention a newly established park run at Easingwold.  The HDSRL fixture was hosted by Dragons and Aire Pacers, and is a multi-terrain tough course at Yeadon, involving tarmac, tracks and steep climbs through woodland.  The drier weather over the previous few days had reduced the muddy parts considerably, and a very pleasant evening saw 26 Harriers among the field of 374 for this latest club championship race.  Josh Cooper was first club finisher, 43rd in 38.05, Stephan Tomaszewski 72nd in 39.46, Martyn Coy, flying just now, 125th in 43.41, Esther Harrison 131st, and 7th female, in 44.13, Rob Burn, emerging from a series of injuries, 142nd and 1st in his new age-group in 44.49, Adrian Saunders, another who is getting better and better, 146th in 44.55, dead heating with the ever competitive David Tervit, Gary Wilkinson 177th in 46.38, Kirsty Naylor 211th in 48.33, Duncan Fothergill 225th in 49.13 – a full 6 minutes quicker than the last time he did the course, Adrian Elsworth 258th in 51.28, Geoff Bullock 260th in 51.49, Jill Libby 268th in 52.25, Faith Coy 277th in 53.25, Lindsay Goom, choosing a toughie for her first HDSRL event, 279th in 53.31, Heather Bell 282nd in 53.34, Chris Wordsworth 320th in 57.33, Craig Ivey 325th in 57.53, Alison Butcher 328th in 58.08, Christine Burn 347th in 61.01, encouraged along by Rosie Gatenby, 348th in61.01, Alan Wikeley 364th in 68.33, Gillian Crane 365th in 68.44, Margaret Wikeley 367th in 69.47, Liz Stephenson 372nd in 76.22, and Ian Codling, permanently nursing a knee injury, 374th in 83.51.  A superb supper followed!

The Whorlton Run the previous evening, one of the longest standing fell races, over 11k, had 6 members among the field of 108, and remarkably, 2 of them would be competing the following evening!  Tom Levi came 12th in 50.31, Josh Cooper whose name appears above, 15th in 51.31, David Fawkes 28th in 55.28, Gary Wilkinson, the second of the HDSRL runners, 78th in 67.54, Hilary Coventry 88th, and 2nd F55, in 69.22 and Trudy Morrice 92nd in 71.55.

The club were proud to have a team in the Cleveland Relay (see race report here) over 109 miles, with 13 members involved.  David Fawkes started the run off from Filey at 5am on Sunday (!!!) covering 15 miles of coastal path in under 2 hours and passing through Scarborough.  He handed the baton over to Bryan Miller in Cloughton and he continued at the same pace through Ravenscar, Robin Hoods Bay, and Whitby. Mike Cropper was next, 9 miles to Runswick Bay via Sandsend, followed by Mike and Tracey Lowther as far as Skinningrove. Duncan Fothergill went via Saltburn to Slapewath, with Ken Wood taking over towards Gribdale having overcome Roseberry Topping. Alison Butcher and Tracey Lowther ran together to Captain Cook’s Monument and into Kildale and Battersby Moor, where Mike Lowther took over for is second leg to take the team to Clay Bank in 8th position.  Josh Cooper started at 2pm from Clay Bank over a hilly route which included Carlton Bank, finishing his 11 miles in Osmotherley from where Helen Asworth and Hilary Coventry took on Black Hambleton and went along the tops to Sneck Gate.  Esther Harrison and David Tervit ran by Sutton Bank and White Horse Bank where Mike Cropper took over again to Helmsley via Cold Kirby and Rievaulx.  The whole race was completed in 16 hours 35 minutes, almost 2 hours quicker than the last time the club entered a team, and finished in a very excellent 8th place.
