Race Report 05/02/2019

You can tell the weather has been bad, snow and ice, when even a fell race – Maybeck 3 crosses – has to be cancelled, largely due to the difficulties with car parking!  Local Park Runs were definiteley off, and Rosie Gatenby was the only member to find a Park Run anywhere, at Fritton Lake.  On a very cold morning, she finished 31st out of 63 in 30.47.

Meanwhile, arrangements continue for the popular Thirsk 10, to be held on March 17th, 10 am – note the new time – based on Thirsk Racecourse.  This mainly flat, 10 mile road race offers a fast time for experienced runners and is a more manageable course for newer people to running.  This will be the 41st running of the event, started originally as a race from Northallerton to Thirsk by club founder and running enthusiast, Norman Smith, who sadly died 10 years ago, but who would be proud of how the race continues to flourish.   The course had to be changed as one year, shortly after the race had started, the level crossing gates at Northallerton went down after the first few runners had gone through.  (Nothing new there, then!)  They had a big advantage, but the bulk of runners were left feeling very frustrated.  The course has had a few changes over the years, and is now  a 1 lap route along Newsham Road, through Sandhutton, Busby Stoop and Carlton Miniott, with an out and back stretch along Sandhutton Lane before returning to the finish at the Racecourse.

There is a bonus for a male winner beating the course record of 48.45, set by Jonathan Taylor of Morpeth Harriers in 2015, and for a female beating 57.10 set by Alyson Dixon of Sunderland Strollers in 2013.A Wheelchair race begins at 9.50 and entries are welcome. Before any of those, and untimed, off road, Fun Run over about 2 miles begins at 9am.A date for your diary – the Sessay Swift 6k will take place on Wed August 21st this year, starting at 7.30pm

Hello club members and friends of the Thirsk 10 road race. We would just like to provide a brief update to inform everybody that for obvious reasons the Thirsk 10 race will not be held in March 2021 however, we intend to reassess the situation in the Spring with a view to holding the event later in the year subject to national and local restrictions in place at the time. We apologise for the disappointment this will undoubtably cause, however I am sure that everybody appreciates that the Covid 19 Pandemic is a fluid situation with rules and restrictions seemingly changing on a daily basis. We will provide a further update in once we have been able to consider matters. Assuring you of our best intentions at all times, keep running and stay safe. The Thirsk 10 Team.
