Race Report 04/04/2017

Harriers made a start on their official 40th anniversary celebrations this week with special cakes, supplied by their gem of a coach Sonja van der Westhuisen, after a hard training session, of course!  It was a pity to eat these works of art, and they tasted just as good as they looked.

At the business end of the weekend, 13 members were at Fountains Abbey for the Park Run, thankfully returned to its correct course after several weeks of maintenance on footpaths, and resulting in several people achieving PBs.  Ian Crane and Rosie Gatenby both completed their 50th Park Run, Ian coming 87th out of 325 in 24.22, missing a PB by 1 second, and Rosie 193rd in 28.55.  Jody Sygrove, improving with every outing, was first club finisher, 24th in PB 20.36, Andy Butcher 94th in 24.34, Sara Langstaff 165th in 27.49, Alison Butcher, another continually improving runner,  169th in PB 28.06, Dave Baker 194th in 28.57, Linda Bamforth 212th in 29.33, Drikus van der Westhuisen – perhaps showing the most improvement of all, 216th in PB 29.39, Gillian Crane 220th in 29.53, Liz Stephenson 276th in PB 34.29, Ian Codling 278th in 34.40 and Marian Codling 312th in 38.59.

At Northallerton, Rob Burn was 10th out of 84 in 21.49 and Peter Richardson 22nd in 24.48.  Charlotte Wilton was at Albert Park and came 39th out of 265 in 21.06.

Tracy Hayden was among the field of 325 at the Fountains 10k – which bears no resemblance to the Fountains Abbey Park Run!!  This tough course, which starts from the school at Grantley with at least a mile of steady uphill, then continues over boggy, strength-sapping moorland before some relief on roads, with a sting in the tail at the end – another steady climb towards the finish and a final run in descent.  Tracy came 291st in a very creditable 71.19,  before enjoying the delicious pork pie on offer!
