Paul Takes On The Foston and Thornton le Clay 10k

Five Harriers were among the thousands of finishers in this year’s Great North Run on a pouring wet morning with temperatures in the region of 16 degrees.  Alan Harman, in his 15th consecutive GNR and 68th Half marathon in total, took a very good time of 1.44.43, his best for a year or two.  Three Harriers in their first Great North Run finished about together, with Lynne Jackson and Lisa Brown both taking an excellent 2.11.20 and Janet Balmain just a few seconds behind in 2.11.25.  Phillip Craig, improving all the time, took 2.28.49.  He was pleased to do high 5’s with Ellie Simmonds and Mo Farah at the start.
Jack Spence had another superb performance in the Junior Great North Run the previous day, on a fine, sunny afternoon, to come very good 9th.  The 4k course goes up one side of the quay at Newcastle and back down the other and Jack took 14.18 minutes.
The Roseberry Topping Fell race, a straight up and down race which was under threat at 4.30 pm because of pouring rain, was run on time in fine, if damp, conditions and Noel Clough, flying as ever, came 7th out of 91 finishers in 14.10.  Sarah Glover, in her element in this sort of race, was 49th in 17.56,  Alan Wikeley 76th, and 1st M65, in 22.02 and Lorraine Hiles 79th in 22.51.
Paul Atkinson was the club’s sole representative in the Foston and Thornton le Clay 10k at the weeknd and finished 26th out of 159 runners in a very good and ever improving 41.44.
At the altogether hillier Harewood Trail 10k, on an ideal morning for running, Alan Harman came 39th in 49.45 and Ian Codling 100th in 65.01.
