Rob’s weekly blog and training update w/c 15/01/18

Ian Codling intends to do his 50th park run at Fountains Abbey, if anyone feels like coming along to support him then that would be great. Sorry I can’t be there Ian, but Joshua is cross-country running in Knaresborough.

Commondale Clart – 10:30am (8.3km/220m). Registration at Village hall, Commondale. Lovely hill at the start then into the mud. Joshua and I are really looking forward to this one!!

York Knavesmire Harriers Brass Monkey Half marathon – RACE FULL
Distance: 13.1 miles, Flat, Road, Start: 10:00am

Temple Newsam 10 – 9:30am (10miles) Temple Newsam, Colton, Leeds, LS15 0AE

7pm. Flatts Just behind the swimming pool. Last week did a little core work which was also included running and it worked quite well, everyone kept warm and we had a work out. For those carrying a little injury or would prefer to run on the grass then the lighting is good enough for you train alongside the main group. Sonja hopes to do something similar. Do not let the cold weather put you off!!

Social run from Thirsk and Sowerby leisure centre at 7pm (meet in foyer) on well-lit paths and pavements. Suitable for all abilities; there will be several stops to run back/regroup, no-one runs by themselves or gets left behind. New and returning Tuesday night runners always welcome.
Route to be decided on the night, around 5 miles. Please wear high vis if you have it.

7pm Thirsk School, sports hall. A good warm up followed by 20 minutes core work and then split into 2 groups for speed work. Outside group. 3x (2 x 3mins / 1 min rec) 2min between sets.
This week we had two large groups turn out for the training sessions, it was good to see so many new faces. Welcome to Thirsk and Sowerby harriers. The weather wasn’t too good on either night, I was well impressed. Please remember as coaches we are there to encourage, motivate and hopefully inspire you to greater heights but how hard you train is entirely up to you. But if you don’t put in the effort you don’t get the results. Every time you ache after a bit session could the first step to your next pb!!

There was quite a demand for new vests last night, so we will try to have some at every training session during the next few weeks. I look forward to seeing you running in them.
PLEASE NOTE WE MUST LEAVE THE SCHOOL BY 8:15pm, those of you wanting showers must take note of this.

Please note that Wednesday 24th Jan is not available, so it would be a good opportunity to have the time trial this week and continue at school the following week. I was also thinking as half the club prefer trail and country to road then maybe we could have the time trial in Kilburn woods this month (weather dependant) and just to make things fair and even swop it around the following month and have it on station road. This way we can maybe make everyone little happier than they otherwise would be.

Message from the chairman:
I’ve had my lesson on the website now to input a few things, hopefully this will mean that we can use it more effective and frequently. Thanks to Liz and Richard for all you do behind the scenes. Hopefully this is on the website before the group email…. (If I’ve done it right!!!!)

Now the results are out for the JHJ and Cpt Cooks I can make a few comments. In the JHJ there were more Women finishers than men (52% to 48%) and I guess in a world where everyone is talking about equality then I would expect something along these lines. I don’t know whether this is a first but if it had been 30 years ago then it would have probably been 10% -90%. Interestingly at Cpt Cooks it was probably 80% men 20% women. In terms of actually effort to run them I would put them both pretty equal, so I wonder why such a low percentage of Women choose to run it! When this race first started some 30’ish years ago I don’t think Women were allowed to run the full distance, but I may be wrong, just maybe none chose to run it. I also did a google search on both male winners of each race and I noted that in the past year both had run a sub 2.30 marathon, 32min 10k and 15/16min 5k. They are also both champions on fell and xcountry. I suspect the first Women will have similar results. I was stood next to the Women at the start who won Cpt Cooks this year and she wasn’t for waiting for me!

I have been saying for years that you can be good at road, trail and fell all at the same time but if you want to be the best you can possibly be then you need strength, you need core and you need speed. In the past I have won both these races!
