Rob’s weekly blog and training update w/c 29/10/18

Joshua hits 18!! (yes, I feel old); over the last 12 months Joshua has taken on the 1000-mile challenge and will hopefully complete this at Fountains Park Run on Saturday morning. He has been raising money for Wendy’s wish. Wendy's Wish was started in honour of Wendy Reed, (Joshua’s beautiful God-mother).

Wendy’s Wish is a family run charity that started in memory of Wendy Reed, who died on 6th January 2017, 5 years after being diagnosed with “ocular melanoma” (a type of eye cancer). When someone has cancer, the effects reach far beyond the patient and our family motto has always been “we’re all in this together”. As a family, we set up the charity to raise money for the Eye Tumour Research Fund and to help cancer patients and their families, at the same time as raising the profile of all forms of eye cancer.

Please come and support him if you can. Not every 18 year old would do this….. Wendy’s passing touched Joshua’s heart hard; hence why he’s not mentioned this challenge. Joshua has raised £400 so far.

Gormire Gamble (distance approx. 10k); I great fell run on our doorstep. Starting from Sutton Bank Visitor Centre at 11am. Be there early to fill the registration form in. Registration on the day.
Entry on day fee ONLY £5.00
Anyone able to help marshal please contact Bryan Miller on or 07974213939

We are hosting this event which basically means we have to do all the work to make it take place and at the end of the day any profits go towards club funds. Apart from the final climb which is quite straight forward most of this course could be classed as reasonably good going and not too difficult. The ground is also very dry at the moment which means it should be fast going and the only problem I would suggest is lots and lots of leaves on the course but at least if you fall you could have a soft landing. Please bring plenty of warm, dry clothing because snow is forecast.

7pm, Down on the Flatts by the swimming pool with Sonja. (Thirsk School CLOSED) Sonja is back from yet more altitude training so please don't be late.
You may wish to bring gloves and a hat.

Social run from Thirsk and Sowerby leisure centre at 7pm (meet in foyer) on well-lit paths and pavements. Suitable for all abilities; there will be several stops to run back/regroup, no-one runs by themselves or gets left behind. New and returning Tuesday night runners always welcome.
Route to be decided on the night, around 5 miles. Please wear high vis if you have it.

Station road time trial. Starting at the Station car park 7.20pm. Athletic Club will open around 6.50pm. Volunteers for time keeping please!!
Please park at TAC, Lidl or Tesco and have a warm up jog to the train station.

Time Trial - First starter off at 19:20 ie. from Train Station to Lidl and back to station.
Then a jog back to your car, nice to get 4 miles in your legs! However, those whom just want to do 2 miles can park at the train station.

You should be looking for a strong, even paced run after all the good training we have done lately. There are only a few simple rules:
1. Run on the left when facing an on coming runner.
2. If you must run on the road ( and some do!!) don't do it unless you are facing on coming traffic.
3. High - vis vest. Wear one. It's simple, if you don't have one then you should only run on a treadmill or run just during the day.
Lets have a fast and safe time trial. I am responsible for your safety during club sessions!!!

7pm sharp, Kilburn Woods, Osgodby car park. Dress for the weather and bring a headtorch.

Bring a clean jumper and some beer tokens for refreshments at the Forresters Arms afterwards.

Two races with a difference

CHAMPIONSHIP RACE - GOOD LUCK to anyone doing the Guy Fawkes 10-mile at Ripley.

CROSS-COUNTRY - GOOD LUCK to anyone doing the NYSD Whitby Cross Country, Caedmon School, Airy Hill, Whitby YO21 1QA – I’ll be there, hopefully we won’t need to use the rope this year.

Message from the head-coach:

Plans are going fine so far with one or two different obstacles from those used in spring. please add your name to the list if you want to take part, either at training or send an email via Fran.
