Cleveland Way Relay – Go Team Thirsk!!

David Fawkes is leading the way from Filey at 5am; followed by Bryan Miller and Mike Cropper takes us to mile 39. Mike and Tracey Lowther soon take the baton, then I (Duncan) take over to leave the coastline behind.  Ken Wood hits Roseberry Topping to meet Alison Butcher.

Joshua Cooper (in his running shorts, I hope!!) starts the second phase off at Clay Bank. Helen Ashworth and Hilary Coventry take to the hills again from Osmotherley. On home turf, Esther Harrison and David Trevit go from Sneck Yate to White Horse; to see the return of Mike Cropper taking the baton home to Helmsley.

Cricket field. As last week but I’m told it may even be a little bit tougher. Don’t have too much for tea whatever you do!!

Beginners group

Week 12. 7pm Back field.

We are thinking of you! You need to get in your 30 min run this Friday/Saturday then you’re almost there. Andy and I have every confidence in that you will complete you target run challenge on the 6th July, all that remains to be done is that you start believing it too. Monday will be your biggest session to date but then you get an easy 12 day ease down to your parkrun. Please focus on your target date because we are going to have a little party afterwards too. You have all improved tremendously in such a short time and we thank you for your commitment.



Social run from Thirsk and Sowerby leisure centre at 7pm (meet in foyer). Mostly off road depending on the weather. Suitable for all abilities; there will be several stops to run back/regroup, no-one runs by themselves or gets left behind. New and returning Tuesday night runners always welcome.

 Route to be decided on the night, around 5 miles. Please wear high vis if you have it. Trail shoes not essential but can be worn if you have them.


7pm. (7.20 start) Monthly time trial. Sutton Bank

Monthly 2-mile time trial. It’s around the longest day so we should be able to see for miles. I couldn’t think of anywhere better to be running so come and enjoy the moment.

Out one mile and then back again along the Cleveland Way. Road shoes are fine.


7pm sharp, Starting from Sutton Bank visitors centre.

Bring a clean t-shirt and some beer tokens for refreshments afterwards.

Message from the head-coach:

At the moment I’m struggling with carrying a little too much weight which has more to do with eating too many Reindeer stakes and the occassional rum and coke and maybe just not training too seriously while I’ve been carrying a few niggles. It’s maybe only 5% extra or so but it’s all to carry around. (5% is 75 seconds for me in a parkrun)  I’m finding it very hard to complete my interval sessions. My pace judgement and leg speed is good but I’ve lost quite a lot of strength so I’m working on that too. It’s always a constant battle between input and output. There is no short cut to running, you either do it or you don’t.

I’m also having a few conflicting issues with my watch!! My strength has always been my pace judgement and the ability to go from A to B a set number of times at a set pace. Each and everyone should always be even. When I pop my watch onto my profile it regularly has me running at different average speeds over a set distance over a same set time. I’m just wondering if It’s picking up signals from Martyn’s watch who runs next to me that is confusing the issue! Is this possible I wonder?

 Aug 11th –  Darlington 10k – flat 2 lap road race. Sun am. Potential PB course  “  “

Aug 21st – Sessay Swift 6k – local flat road race – 7.30 pm Wed evening

 Sept 1st – Tholthorpe 10k – fast, slightly undulating road race. Sun am Enter early

 Sep 29th – Redcar Half Marathon

 Oct 6th – Saltergate Gallows Fell Race, 17k, 430m ascent  e.o.d – REPLACEMENT / ALTERED RACE

 Oct 27th – Whixley 10k – multi terrain

 Nov 3rd –  Guy Fawkes 10 – mostly on road, with some significant hills  Enter early – ALTERED RACE

 Nov/Dec – XC (to be arranged) 1 cross country
