Training

At Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers we meet two nights per week, these are Monday and Wednesday at 7pm.

Monday nights - circuit and core training with Sonia

At Thirsk school in the winter and at the Athletic Club through the Summer. See this weeks blog for details on this weeks training.

Wednesday nights - interval training with Rob + additional indoor circuits through the winter

Meets at the Athletic Club for training through the Summer and at Thirsk School through the Winter months.

There are also regular social runs organised by members on an ad-hock basis. These are generally publicised on Social Media or via email.

Social Runs

Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends find members out and about on their favourite routes.  Come and enjoy a social run around Thirsk and the surrounding villages.  

They're always a nice sociable event so come along and join in.  Keep a look out on the club's Facebook page for more details.

Time Trials

Each month (usually the last Wednesday) we run a time trial which allows you to monitor the progress you are making from the training sessions.  This takes the form of a two mile run with runners being set off at 15 second intervals and times being published by email and on the website within a few days.  We mix it up through the year by running at various locations including Station Road, Sutton Bank or even around the racecourse. 

So, when you get to training/the start line get your name down on the start list so you know your start time - it's just you against the clock!

Handicap Races

We also run a Christmas, Easter and Summer handicap race in place of the monthly time trial.  Once again, this is a two mile run, but this time your start time is determined by an average of your recent time trial runs so that, in theory, we all cross the line together (but somehow it never happens like that!). The winner takes home a star prize with all that take part getting a prize!

Again, get there early and find the timekeepers to confirm you are running and to establish your start time.  And don't forget to practice your 'Mo-bot'-esque celebration as you cross the finish line!

Training and Time Trial Locations

The following are the commonly used locations we meet (see Rob's weekly training blog for this weeks locations):-

Thirsk Athletic Club

With car park, changing facilities, showers and of course, a bar for that post-training refreshment.  Find us on the inside of the racecourse, running around the cricket pitch.  From time to time, we'll head 50 yards up the road (past the squash courts) to the football fields.

Thirsk School and Sixth Form College

Over winter (roughly mid-Sept to Easter) we train in (and around) the school.  Head in the main doors and straight ahead through a series of doors to the gym (door on the right) for Monday sessions, and to the end of the corridor and the sport hall for Wednesday sessions.  Wednesday's start indoors before splitting in two - those who have head-torches and want to run outside OR those who'd rather keep warm and stay in the sports hall!

Station Road, Time Trial

Usually following a warm up at the school, head down to Lidl for the start.  The two mile run takes you out along Station Road to Thirsk Train Station (touch the boards at the bottom of the car park) before heading back to Lidl.

When run as the handicap race, we start and finish at the station to allow for the mass finish!

Sutton Bank, Time Trial

Head up to the Car Park at Sutton Park Visitors Centre (Facebook/twitter/email for anyone wanting lifts).  Carefully cross back over the road to the footpath to the cliff edge.  The start/finish line is visible from the car park so you should see us warming up.  The 2 mile run is along the footpath, turning around at our precisely placed marker, and back to the finish.  Expect a slow time as you forget you are running against the clock and start admiring the view!
