The Cake At Levisham Brings Out The Harriers

An enthusiastic bunch of runners gathered in thick fog to tackle the Shaun Lee Johnstone Memorial 10 mile multi terrain race near Boroughbridge at the weekend, in memory of a young man who lost his life to a brain tumour at the age of 16.  You needed to be enthusiastic to tackle this course, which was mud virtually from beginning to end, and Ray Johnstone and his family are to be congratulated on putting this race together, along with all the other work they do to raise money for research into this most dreadful of diseases.  Charlotte Sanderson once again lead club runners home to finish a superb 11th, and 1st lady, in 65.30 minutes, with Nik Sutton-Haigh 105th in 96.46 and Ian Codling 132nd in 115.08.
The previous weekend, an altogether more daunting task faced entrants in the Langdale Horseshoes Fell Race in the Lake District when much of the course was covered in clag but which cleared up to give fine views at the finish.  Stewart Mechie, in his first attempt at this Lakes classic, finished 89th in 3.03.33, Gavin Coventry 107th in 3.07.59 and Brett Edgeworth 220th in 3.39.41.
The following day saw race 2 in the NEHRA winter fell race series at Levisham-Saltergate this was a tough race with muddy climbs and descent’s and long fast tracks with Stewart Mechie 34th in 96.45 showing Gavin Coventry 35th in 96.45 a clean pair of heals in the final downhill, Chris Raw 42nd in 99.54, Lorraine Hiles  55th in  103.49, Sarah Glover 61st in 106.05, Alan Wikeley 82nd in 128.20 and Fran Jeffrey 86th in 135.00. After the race the 7 Harriers enjoyed soup, cake, tea and of course a pint to finish a fine weekends racing.
A gentler outing will be the next NYSD Cross Country League fixture at Caedmon School, Whitby on Sat Oct 27th when all members are eligible to run.
