It was a great surprise to be awarded the athlete of the month. After many years away from the running club due to having both hips replaced over a 10 year period I thought that I would never be able to participate in competitive running again. My wife Gillian joined the club 4 years ago when she retired and she asked me to run at a park run with her whilst we were on holiday. Shortly after, I took up running again and re-joined the Harriers after many years away from running.

I also have a love of cycling and this year took on the challenge of cycling from John o’ Groats to Lands End. This improved my overall stamina immensely, as I was averaging 80 to 90 miles a day.

Back at the club my fitness and running times improved with the help of our great coaches; and during the months of September and October, over a 5 week period, I achieved 4 PB’s at Fountains Abbey Parkrun, hence the award. Many thanks for the support and encouragement of fellow club members.
