Seventeen Harriers were among the more than 1000 finishers of the popular Brass Monkey Half Marathon organised by Knavesmire Harriers at York last Sunday. The flat course lends itself to PB's, hence its popularity, and international runner Stephen Hepples of Newham and Essex Beagles was the winner in 1.08.13, beating regular front runner Ian Fisher of Otley AC into 2nd place in 1.09.45. Alan Somers took 1.37.39 and came 317th, David Shorrocks 395th in 1.41.14, Ken Evitt, finishing alongside Hester Cox, 420 th in 1.42.32, Ernie Huck 437th in 1.43.31, Nigel Morgan 534th in 1.47.44, Jill Knight 541st in 1.47.51, Sarah Somers 548th in 1.48.21, Helen Ashworth 617th in 1.51.56, Alan Harman 646th in 1.53.09, Steve Billings 672nd in 1.54.04, Judith Seaton 796th 2.02.29, Yvonne Wood 862nd in 2.07.29, Jo Fambely 870th in 2.07.57 , Eileen Howell 883rd in 2.09.30, and Nik Sutton-Haigh 896th in 2.10.40.
The previous weekend, rather fewer runners took part in the Clay Bank East Fell Race, over a definitely more hilly course, though the turnout of 113 was still quite good compared with some recent races. Andy Hilton of Acorn came 1 st in 35.31 and Peter Wilkin put in a good performance to finish 14th in 43.15, Alasdair Thorpe 47th in 48.44, Steve Harrison 90th in 55.13 and Nicola Thorpe 102nd in 57.07.
