Race Report 28/05/19

A very busy week began last Tuesday on a fine evening, with the first event in the HDSRL hosted at Harrogate by Harrogate Harriers, mostly on road with a couple of long uphills.  This was also a club Championship race and 31 Harriers were involved, the first home being Ken Wood, apparently fully recovered from his London Marathon efforts.  He came 46th out of a large field of 531, in 39.18, with Stephan Tomaszewski, always competitive, 61st in 40.04, Josh Cooper 71st in 40.44, Mike Cropper 111th in 42.38, Matt Jones 119th in 43.16, Esther Harrison 153rd in 44.54, David Tervit 170th in 45.32, Adrian Saunders 172nd in 45.42, Martyn Coy 184th in 46.06, Gary Wilkinson 232nd in 48.00, Paul Bradford 247th in 48.40, Fran Jeffery, unusually for her, in a road race, 249th in 48.44, Dave Baker 275th in 49.52, Duncan Fothergill 292nd in a much improved time of 50.39, Adrian Elsworth 357th in 53.44, Geoff Bullock 363rd in 53.57, Jill Libby 370th in 54.22, Faith Coy 372nd in 54.28, Trish Radford 415th in 56.20, Craig Ivey 463rd in 59.47, Joanne Hunt 468th in 60.24, Rosie Gatenby 427th in 61.02, Christine Burn 502nd in 61.04, Molly Mayes 506th in 65.27, Gillian Crane 520th in 69.01, Margaret Wikeley 521st in 71.31, Sharon Keegan 524th in 72.45, Alan Wikeley 527th in 73.23, Liz Stephenson 528th in 73.47, Ian Codling 529th in 81.03 and Marian Codling 530th in 82.24.

15 members were at the Northallerton 10k at the weekend, starting and finishing in the High Street, and just managing to avoid the heavy rain which had fallen earlier.  Mike Cropper, in fine form, finished 46th out of 838 in 43.26, Kirsty Naylor 167th in 49.30, Pete Jackson 186th in  50.22, Tom Watson 233rd in 51.32, Ken Evitt – what a long time since he did a 10k road race – 361st in 57.02, Phillip Craig 394th in 58.04, Sarah Harrison 501st in 60.43, given the same time as Andrea Colls.  Sue Low was 516th in 61.30, Lianne Robinson 619th in 65.43, Molly Mayes 651st in 67.28, Dianne Brown 694th in 70.32, Jemma Cropper 699th in 70.48, Claire Duffey 733rd in 73.25, and Siobhan Woodland 755th in 75.03.

On the same warm day, half an hour later the 35th running of the Melmerby 10k took place with a field of 313.  Alan Simpson was first club finisher, 98th in 45.03, Andy Butcher 103rd in 45.15, Faith Coy 220th in 55.02, Lindsay Goom 224th in 55.21, Alison Butcher 260th in 60.10, Joanne Hunt 272nd in 61.17, Ian Codling 311th in 80.04 and Marian Codling 312th in 82.04.

Ken Wood, meanwhile, took part in his second marathon in just over a month, the Liverpool Marathon, taking in both Anfield and Goodison, and finished a wonderful 83rd in 3.08.41.  Very well done.

4 members were involved in the Roseberry Romp Fell Race, organised by the National Trust, and with a field of over 300, unusual for a fell race.  The winding route to approach Roseberry Topping, with a long down hill to finish, took in 1050 feet of ascent over 5.1 miles, and club members taking part were, in finishing order, fell race stalwarts David Fawkes, Marc Davies, Hilary Coventry and Helen Ashworth.
