Race Report 20/12/16

The main race of the weekend was the festive and popular Loftus and Whitby Poultry Run, about 8 miles, a road race with significant off-road sections and hills.  Conditions, weatherwise, were excellent, and a brass band and many Christmas outfits added to the seasonal nature of the race.  Rob Lickley continues his wonderful form and finished 60th out of 485 in a superb 55.39 with Alan Simpson 204th in 66.13, Marc Davies 228th in 67.54, Ian Codling 466th in 95.32, Bev Davies 469th in 98.28 and Marian Codling 482nd in 106.52.

The popular and beautiful Fountains Abbey Park Run had a massive 372 finishers this week, with Martin Cummins 102nd in 24.53, Ian Crane 105th in 24.56, Nigel Morgan 108th in 25.03, Malcolm Aitken 119th in 25.33, Emma Adams 255th in 31.34, closely followed by Dad, Paul, in 31.35, Gillian Crane 280th in 32.57 and Jane Cummins 340th in 37.19.  Peter Richardson, a very worthy Park Run ambassador, was among the field of 482 at the Newcastle event and finished 281st in 27.09.

Awards were handed out at the annual very successful Christmas Dinner and Presentation evening.  In the men’s Club Championship, over a series of 8 races to count, the hard working Stephan Tomaszewski was a very admirable winner with maximum points, followed by Graham Robinson 2nd and Rob Lickley 3rd.  Hilary Coventry won the ladies’ competition with Charlotte Wilton 2nd and Helen Ashworth 3rd. The 2017 championship has an early start, the Captain Cooks Fell race on New Year’s Day!  The Most Improved Male award went to Rob Lickley and the Most Improved Female award to Gillian Crane.  Liz Stephenson was a deserved winner of the Endeavour award.  A new trophy for the Runners’ Runner was presented to Andy Butcher – he is an ever present, taking sessions when required, always available to set up equipment, supportive of those around him and he was the only person to complete all 18 of the Club Championship races.

The Christmas Handicap was held on Wednesday, with Phillip Craig another worthy winner of the trophy.  Tom Levi was 2nd and Cameron Choules 3rd.  A very varied and delicious communal supper followed!

At the recent Eskdale Eureka fell Race, race 2 of the Northern Runner/Dave Parry Winter Series, David Read came 87th out of 130 in 84.38, closely followed by Marc Davies, 88th in 84.48.

On the same weekend, Ian and Marian Codling were among the 570 finishers of the Great Langdale Christmas Pudding 10k, Ian coming 530th in 70.53 and Marian 562nd in 81.37.

It was with some pride and pleasure on Sunday evening, in the Sports Personality of the Year programme to see the Helen Rollason Trophy be awarded to Ben Smith.  The club were proud to have supported Ben in February in one of his “401 marathons in 401 days” quest, to publicise the anti-bullying campaign, for which he raised a large some of money.  It was a very well deserved award.
