Race Report 10/09/19

The Club’s Summer Handicap took place in Wass Woods, in conditions which were far from ideal, with strong winds only marginally tempered by shelter from the trees.  Mike Cropper, who really can’t do much wrong just now, was the first finisher, winning the summer shield, with Tom Levi in 2nd place and David Tervit 3rd.  Start positions had been based on time trials over the summer term, with Duncan Fothergill doing the calculations, and thanks to Duncan for all his input.  Nibbles were quickly consumed afterwards, and prizes handed out!

Several miles away, on the east coast, Ian and Marian Codling were taking part in the final race of the series organised by New Marske Harriers at Redcar, the Autumn 5k.  If the winds were strong in Wass Woods, they were positively gale force on the coast, and running into the wind became almost impossible. Blowing sand added to the unpleasantness, and one felt what it must be like to be a wall being sand blasted!!!  Travel over the return direction with the wind during the 2 lap course didn’t quite make up for the outward section.  Nevertheless, 163 people completed the race (with quite a lot of no shows), with none achieving a PB, and Ian Codling took 40.19, Marian 42.16.

Conditions at the Fountains Abbey Park Run were just about ideal, and Mike Cropper, set the task of 25 minute pacer, completed the course in 25.10, achieving his target very effectively, slower than he would normally go, in 101st place.  Ian Crane came 197th out of 353 in 29.29, Paul Adams 218th in 30.28, Gillian Crane 268th in 32.43, Wendy Bennett 306th in 36.50, Ian Codling 313th in 37.21 and Marian Codling 337th in 39.07

Esther Harrison was the club’s only representative at the Millfield event, but the certainly made an impression, finishing 1st lady in 12th place overall in 22.03.  Well done Esther.
