Muddy Croft And A Snow Storm Does Not Stop The Harriers

On a very cold, windy Sunday afternoon, 5 Harriers took part in the NYSD cross country race at Croft, Race 4 of the series.  The course was testing, with quite a lot of mud, long grass and oblique inclines and descents!  As an added handicap, the rain/sleet began to fall for the ladies’ race, but 60 runners managed to complete the 3-lap 6k course.  Pat Kirby came in 45th, and 2nd in the V3 category, in 33.50, with Christine Burn 54th in 39.12 and Marian Codling 59th in 44.29.  The men had to do 4 laps, with the mud worse than ever after all the previous races, but Phil Utley ran well, as ever, to finish 16th out of the 113 entrants in 31.13 with club captain Merv Burn 51st in 35.05.
On the same day, the Eskdale Eureka fell race was taking place in conditions which were at least as bad, if not worse, for the 107 entrants, with hail an added factor and snow at the finish, but Hester Cox put in her usual stalwart performance to finish 64th, and 2nd F40, in 78.42 with David Read 79th in 87.31.
A couple of weeks earlier, Hester Cox took part in the 23 mile LDWA Wensleydale Wedge race, and came in 58th out of 237 finishers in a time of 4h 39.
Noel Clough and Pete Wilkin weathered the terrible conditions at the weekend for the North of England V40s Cyclo Cross Championships at Stainton near Barnard Castle.  The course was a mud bath, with a snow storm providing an additional handicap, but Noel Clough seemed to relish the conditions to come 1st ahead of a former champion.  Pete Wilkin was disappointed with his race and was 5th V50 finisher.
