Marian’s Weekly Race Report – wc 16/12/13

At this time of year there are fewer races around and four members travelled to Cumbria on Saturday for the Great Langdale Christmas Pudding 10k Race.  Rain and strong winds had been forecast and they duly arrived about 30 minutes before the start of the race, meaning runners were pretty soaked through both before and during the race, with plenty of water on the road.  The course itself is seriously undulating and conditions seemed extra tough this year, though this friendly event is always popular.  David Goddard finished 346th out of a field of 475 in 59.46 with Ian Codling 436th in 66.45,  Pam Sherlock 464th in 74.28 and Marian Codling 469th in 77.03.  All runners received a Christmas pudding – but getting away from the race was quite tough, with some people needing a push with cars getting bogged down in the car parking field!

A week before, Hester Cox took on the Frost Bite 30 ultra race, with 30 miles of running and about 3000 feet of climb on a fine morning for running.  The race begins at Pateley Bridge and takes in the Nidderdale Way and over windswept moors before reaching the turning point at Angram, where it was particulary boggy and wet.  It continues via Middlesmoor and Ramsgill before finishing back at Pateley.  Almost 100 runners took part, with Hester 5th lady finisher in 5.05.27.  Well done!

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers are always pleased to welcome new members, both beginners and experienced runners, with road, trail and fell running are all available, as well as ultra runs for the dedicated few, and several people have tackled triathlons.  Details can be found on the club’s website – come along and give us a try.
The new Club Championship gets underway in January, with the first race being the cross country fixture at Summerhill, Hartlepool, on Jan 12th followed by the Broughton Woods Wobble Fell Race on Feb 2nd, and plenty of others in between, of course.
