Marian’s Weekly Race Report – w/c 06/01/14

The year’s activities opened on New Year’s Day with the annual Captain Cook’s Fell Race, designed to blow away the Christmas cobwebs!  The race is over about 5 miles with some stiff climbs, starting off in Great Ayton and heading up to the Cook Monument.  It was a cold, windy, day and rain as the race started was not helpful.  Cameron Choules, getting back into some sort of form after injury,  finished 52nd in 40.01, with Paul Atkinson 106th in 43.55,  Stewart Mechie 130th in 45.35,  David Read 170th in 48.00,  Graham Robinson 185th in 49.09,  Carol Morrison 188th, and 2nd F50, in 49.13,  Hilary Coventry 211th in 51.16 and Fran Jeffery 221st in 52.42.

A very busy weekend for the club began with the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships held on a fine day at Lightwater Valley.  The course was tough, and rather longer than it was advertised to be, but conditions underfoot were good and the forecast stormy weather didn’t materialise.  Claire Gillan was the sole lady entrant from the club and finished 142nd in 45.44.  In the men’s race over about 12k, Dan Holdsworth led club members home to come 76th out of 260 finishers in a very good 48.45, with Greg MacDonald 99th in 50.18,  Steve Middleton 138th in 52.50, Martyn Coy 226th in 61.46,  Marc Davies 232nd in 62.54,  Bryan Miller 245th in 66.19 and Phillip Craig, doggedly determined as ever, 260th in 88.52.

The following day, 10 Harriers were among the 241 finishers of the Old Monks’ Race at Hart near Hartlepool on another fine if cold morning.  After a lot of rain, underfoot conditions were predictably muddy in places on the undulating course but  Rob Burn ran well to come 39th in 36.16,  Stuart Waters 161st in 46.33,  Brian Smith 166th in 47.25,  Chris Sykes 186th in 50.12,  Richard Easby 208th in 52.28,  Christine Burn 214th in 53.26,  Ian Codling 228th in 58.20, Bev Davies, accompanied by husband Marc, who must have been tired after the hard race the previous day, 236th, both given the same time of 64.53 and Marian Codling 240th in 67.24.  Rob Burn and Marian Codling won age-group prizes.
