Rob’s weekly blog and training update w/c 28/01/19

7pm. Thirsk School.

INSIDE GROUP: Last week was just a taster but things will slowly intensify from now on. Remember to pace yourself, you need to be finishing the sessions comfortably but stretch just that little bit further each week.

OUTSIDE GROUP: The outside group will require head torches and if the weather forecast is anything to go by, a woolly hat and a warm pair of gloves.  Ken and Duncan are taking an outside group giving a choice of two speeds. Go with the one closest to your speed. You will need a head torch and shoes suitable for running on grass. Monday night will be a recovery run, ie 10 min warm up 25 mins steady with a 30 sec stride every 2 to 3 mins with 5 to 10 mins cool down.

Social run from Thirsk and Sowerby leisure centre at 7pm (meet in foyer) on well-lit paths and pavements. Suitable for all abilities; there will be several stops to run back/regroup, no-one runs by themselves or gets left behind. New and returning Tuesday night runners always welcome.

Route to be decided on the night, around 5 miles. Please wear high vis if you have it.

7pm, Kilburn Woods, Osgodby Bank Car park. Monthly 2 mile time trial.

First runners to start around 7.20pm. I am trying to give variety and to be fair to all types and groups of runner. Whether you prefer road or trail I would ask you to please try all the different venues. We are in a cold snap at the moment and it is also winter so please come expecting it to be a little on the chilly side. It will be dark and it could also be slippery underfoot so please run to the conditions. Life is all about experiencing different challenges and this could be one of them. Please warm up into the forestry so you get used to the light, or lack of it and also to the surface you are going to be running on. I would expect some of the stronger runners to arrive earlier and check out the course for windfalls etc. We may even have a couple of inches of snow which would make it quite picturesque, maybe even romantic but no running holding please!

7pm sharp, Kilburn Woods, Osgodby car park. Dress for the weather and bring a headtorch.

Bring a clean jumper and some beer tokens for refreshments at the Forresters Arms afterwards.

Maybeck 3 Crosses (fell race), start Maybeck Car park at 10:30am (check necessary kit list)

Message from the chair:

Thirsk 10 – so far, we have 593 entries to this race; held on Sunday 17th March at 10am (early start time).  Don’t forget to enter!

Please speak to me, Phillip or Ken Wood about marshalling – it’s vital me have helpers on the day to ensure everything runs smoothly. There are jobs available for those who would like to help out and also run, so please get in touch asap.

Beginners – Just4Beginners; following the success in 2017 we are starting another 12 weeks beginners course on Monday 8th April 2019 at 7pm.  This will be run from Thirsk Athletic Club and is only £1 per session.  Please can you let your friends and family know.

Cheers Duncan

Message from the head-coach:

Our next club championship race is the x-country at Richmond on the 17th Feb and just maybe we all ought to be focusing on this for a big turnout similar to Ormesby . If you look at the team results you will see there was a dramatic improvement from previous fixtures. I know there are quite a few who don’t like Richmond very much but I’m of the opinion once you admit to not liking something then you are already admitting defeat before you even put your vest on. Every race is tough, some are just tougher than others. Keep up your training and keep turning up to the training sessions and we will have you in shape enough to give a good performance on the 17th Feb. Remember also I’m providing the cake! I am relying on Rosie to not let me forget.

keep smiling and see you soon, Rob

Note for the diary: Lakes weekend is 15th & 16th November 2019, further details later.
