Rob’s weekly blog and training update w/c 23/07/18


7pm Athletic Club. Sonja once again is back from another session of altitude training but what we are doing I don’t quite know just yet. It won’t be the time trial as I mentioned, this is going to be on the last Monday of the month (30th) on the trail behind the Squash courts as we did once before.

Last Monday night started off wet and as the night went on it just kept getting wetter. We weren’t in any danger and by the looks of it most of you quite enjoyed it. Thanks for sticking to the task in hand and I was right impressed with the work rate you all managed to put into it. Be proud of what you have achieved. Well done to you all.


Social run from Thirsk and Sowerby leisure centre at 7pm (meet in foyer). Mostly off road depending on the weather. Suitable for all abilities; there will be several stops to run back/regroup, no-one runs by themselves or gets left behind. New and returning Tuesday night runners always welcome.
Route to be decided on the night, around 5 miles. Please wear high vis if you have it. Trail shoes not essential but can be worn if you have them.


7pm Athletic Club. 2 x ( 4 x 3 mins / 1 min rec ) 3 mins between sets. Relaxed and smooth 5k pace running. Just maybe we can set out a proper track this week with no obstacles to negotiate so hopefully everything should be pretty straight forward. Usually setting out a track is as much of a challenge as it is actually doing the session itself. Carry on regardless, we always achieve our goal!


CHAMPIONSHIP RACE – James Herriot 14k (Fell) – 2 long hills, stony tracks. Start 11am.
A 14k run over moorland tracks and paths near Castle Bolton in Wensleydale in aid of Rotary charities. 2018 will be the 14th year of the race.

From everyone at Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers to Nidd Valley & HDSRL headquarters – Thanks so much for putting on a great race last night. Very well marshalled, with lots of clapping and cheering. A fantastic supper to end the night and series in style. Roll on 2019. Thanks again!
Yesterday I found myself completing my 200th consecutive day of running this year. Struggling with a little knee problem I hit Asenby running track for a mile.

Message from the head-coach:

Tuesday night was the last in the HDSRL and I wouldn’t like to say how the course should have been classified. At least two thirds of the course was xcountry/trail and most of which only allowed you to run in single file. With only a stride or so between each runner I can’t believe how fast we were running. It was a bit like the early fell races on the NY moors before the days of paved trails. I’m not complaining, I actually quite enjoyed it but it’s very hard work. You don’t have much time to look around and you really do have to concentrate. It was probably the most uneven track I’ve run on for quite some time. It was just a pity such a good course required so many marshals to make sure everyone went in the right direction. I bet quite a few from Nidd Valley would rather have been running. I hope you all enjoyed it too.

Sunday 21st October – Whixley 10k. 11am. Nice multi-terrain race

Sunday 28th October – Sean Lee Johnston 10-mile race. Mostly off road

Nov/Dec – XC (to be arranged) 1 cross country
