Collection of unwanted trainers please – We are collecting unwanted trainers again for The U Foundation; Siankaba, Zambia, Africa. A fantastic cause that Harriers are proud to support.

Please bring them to Monday’s or Wednesday’s session PLEASE CLEAN THEM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.


You’ll remember this……

Some of the villagers at Siankaba turned out recently to help lay a new pathway to the Siankaba Community Trust School. In return, each received a pair of trainers, very kindly donated by Rob Burn and Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers.

(start 11am) – Fox and Hounds Chase, Fox & Hounds, Ainthorpe, nr Castleton, Whitby – THIS RACE INCLUDES JUNIOR DISTANCES

14.5km/457m   –  9miles/1499′     (check necessary kit list)


CHAMPIONSHIP RACE – Ripon 10 – Start time: 10:00 am

The race, which starts and finishes on Hell Wath Nature Reserve, is a hilly but picturesque course that leads the runners from Hell Wath around the Studley Royal Estate with beautiful views of Ripon and the stunning, surrounding countryside



7pm Athletic Club.

Sonja is organising drills and core work and Paul G is putting together a block of ” lung busters” to complement the Wednesday night sessions throughout the summer. I know it is difficult to put an even /constant training program together over these summer months due to the many races that take part. Suffice is to say please be prepared to have a good work out when you attend Club training sessions. We work and strive to improve together. If you are returning from injury or fancy an easier workout then join the group slightly below your usual level. This will be seen as a sign of strength and not as a weakness. Runners are noted for not being sensible from time to time!

Beginners group – Week 6. 7pm Back field. How far can you run in a given time without stopping?


Social run from Thirsk and Sowerby leisure centre at 7pm (meet in foyer). Mostly off road depending on the weather. Suitable for all abilities; there will be several stops to run back/regroup, no-one runs by themselves or gets left behind. New and returning Tuesday night runners always welcome.

Route to be decided on the night, around 5 miles. Please wear high vis if you have it. Trail shoes not essential but can be worn if you have them.


7pm. Athletic Club

We’ll stick with 4 x 30 secs / 30 secs recovery during our warm ups. Nice and smooth and relaxed to help prepare our body for the session ahead.

4 x 5 mins/ 2 mins recovery.     Slightly fewer but longer efforts than last week. If it’s warmer and dryer then slightly faster than your 10k speed, races are coming up, so you need to be able to run long distances with intense speed. Finish with 4 x 30 secs/ 30 recovery. Please read the session carefully before hand then we all know what we are doing!

We now have a cut and rolled grass track around the rugby pitch which we can use when there is a cricket match being played. It’s roughly around 300 metres long but I don’t know how it will work with a large group until we try it. Try and ease off on speed until you get used to the surface and overtake on the outside as the inside has not been rolled. Hopefully all Wednesday night cricket matches will be cancelled so we can use the cricket pitch instead.

If you are not making the Wednesday night sessions you are missing a great opportunity train and improve your times.


7pm sharp, Starting from Osmotherley village.

Bring a clean jumper and some beer tokens for refreshments afterwards at The Golden Lion, 6 West End, Osmotherley  DL6 3AA

Message from the head-coach:

Christine and I will shortly be packing our bags to go and run a race where Steve Bagshall described on tv last week as the coldest place on earth. It is a place where nobody dies of natural causes and it will be total day light for about 86 days. We will be above the circle where if you want to see the northern lights then you will have to look south. The race itinerary suggests we pack and wear two of everything (including woollen knickers!!), part of the course is described as being a little bit tricky and it’s where marshals patrol the course on quad bikes carrying high powered riffles just in case there is the appearance of the worlds greatest killing machine, the polar bear. Dropping out and walking to the finish is not an option. Two minutes before the start of the race when I hold Christine’s hand and I turn to kiss her good luck I know she will be the most frightened and scared person you are ever likely to meet. For someone who had never done any sport what so ever before her 57th birthday and only a hand full of days before her 65th then I think it is a very adventurous and brave thing to. When you see her wearing her tee shirt after the event you will not see anyone with a bigger smile on her face ever. Am I proud of her?  Yes and I love her to bits.

Two days after the race we are travelling up to the Arctic Ice Shelf where it is possible to walk all the way to the North Pole but we are just going to have a look. We’ll leave the walking to someone else..
