Message from the head-coach:

Since around the year 2000 I have tried not to train on road or in built up areas. Firstly to try and reduce the risk of injuries and secondly to avoid having to dodge people and cars and the resulting frustration that always occurs. Simply, I just like to do my own thing. However, I live in Bagby and it must possibly be the worst place ever for trails and footpaths to run on, most of the time they are covered in mud or very much over grown so I do most of my training in Kilburn woods or on top of Sutton bank. I sacrifice a little bit of speed for fewer injuries.

As a family we have just been on holiday to Northern Holland. All seven of us now officially run which doesn’t necessarily mean much but there always seems to be a large pile of running shoes next to the back door, covered in mud and totally wet through. (Not to mention the smell!!) Within a couple of minutes running time from our rented house there was a choice of at least twenty trails, trails for walking, running, cycling and for horses. All of them colour coded, way marked and distances from 5k to 50k and upwards. Trails on tarmac, gravel, heathland and sand. We also ran in ancient forests, on farmland, nature reserves and they are all interconnected. We all ran or cycled every day, and not once did we ever have to dodge a single car and equally as impressive, not one single hill to run up.

But then I was always told there are no hills in Holland!! I managed to track down a race for last Saturday which Christine and I were accepted at the last minute. It took place in a forestry and on sand dunes with several 4 metre climbs on each lap which worked out to be around 200′ of ascent every 5k. Could it officially be called a fell race? Perfect for the hardened cross country runner but perhaps too fast for you regular fell runners!! What a refreshing change to run on compacted sand rather than run in ankle deep mud. I think Christine enjoyed it too, but I haven’t asked her yet, I’m just waiting for the right moment!!!

See you all at Croft, Rob
