Nidd Valley Mud Bath

A busy week saw a series of tough races, culminating in the Burn Valley Half Marathon on Sun in which 18 members were involved.  Conditions for this very hilly, scenic race, were reasonable, at least in temperature, though there was a significant headwind on the outward part.  Phil Utley, continuing his excellent form, finished 11th in 1.26.56,  Kevin Winfield 43rd in 1.38.21,  Lorraine Hiles, in her third race in 5 days, 51st in 1.40.51,  winning by a squeak over Graham Robinson, 52nd in 1.40.52,  Les Sutton-Haigh 75th in 1.47.11,  Keziah Paxton 97th in 1.52.43,  Alan Harman 116th in 1.56.55,  Nik Sutton-Haigh 125th in 2.00.49,  Steve Billings 135th in 2.03.51,  Fiona Needham 137th in 2.04.58,  Cath Lumb 185th in 2.27.49,  Ian Codling 186th in 2.30.13 and Marian Codling 190th in 2.50.23.  Phil Utley, Lorraine Hiles and Marian Codling all won age-group prizes.
Just three days before was the HDSRL fixture hosted by Nidd Valley Runners over a hard, 5 mile cross-country course at Harrogate.  Plenty of mud, some stiffish climbs and long grass made this a very testing course, but Stephan Tomaszewski overcame conditions well to finish 33rd in 33.58, with Rob Burn and Graham Robinson, tussling throughout, and Rob edging it to come 76th in 36.59,  Graham 78th in 37.16,  Lorraine Hiles, in the second of her tough races, 106th in 39.32,  Martyn Coy 110th in 39.45,  Fiona Needham 161st in 44.00,  Hilary Coventry 165th in 44.38,  Fran Jeffery 175th in 45.49,  Carol Morrison 176th in 45.56, David Goddard 179th in 46.22,  Helen Ashworth 196th in 47.49,  Christine Burn 217th in 51.56,  Phillip Craig 219th in 52.02,  Cath Lumb 220th in 652.34,  Ian Codling 222nd in 54.25,  Marian Codling 230th in 64.18,Pat Huck 321st in 64.37 and Pam Sherlock 232nd in 66.38.
The first race of the week was a new fell race, the Carlton Meander, was memorable for its very steep ascents and descents, with slithers down on bracken not uncommon!  Proceeds went to the Cleveland Search and Rescue team.  Pete Wilkin lead club runners home in 9th place, and 1st M50, in 47.26, Noel Clough 34th in 53.55,  Sarah Glover 40th in 56.11, Lorraine Hiles, in Race 1 of the week for her, 47th in 57.21,  Carol Morrison (doing 2 races in 2 nights) 58th in 63.07 and Alan Wikeley 69th in 77.48.
Jack Spence, at 14 years old, was displaying his versatility by coming a manificent 8th in a pentathlon event at Jarrow.  It was his first entry into such a competition, involving hurdles, long jump, shot putt, high jump and 800m and to finish 8th was indeed remarkable.  Jack has had two excellent wins in local Fun Runs at both Rainton and Melmerby , coming 1st out of about 30 at Melmerby in 13.22, a full half minute ahead of the 2nd placed runner. In the Rainton Fun Run, Jack finished 1st in 14.03, almost a minute ahead of the 2nd placed runner.  He appears to have a promising future in athletics if he maintains this standard.
