Marian’s Weekly Race update – w/c 10/02/14

On a very cold day with a biting wind, the latest club championship event took place, the NYSD cross country fixture at Richmond.  The race is held on the old racecourse, an ideal venue, but as it’s high up, it is always exposed to the wind at the best of times!  The long uphill against the wind seemed especially testing, and in the ladies’ race, Nicola Booth did well to come 33rd, after a long lay-off, in 27.10 with Faith Coy 56th in 31.11,  Claire Gillan 58th in 31.26,  Marian Codling 71st in 40.45 and Pam Sherlock 72nd in 41.32.
The V65 men ran in the ladies’ race, with David Goddard taking 29.44,  Alan Wikeley 33.47 and Ian Codling 39.24.
Cameron Choules was first home in the men’s race over twice the distance, finishing 27th in 42.34, followed by Walter Busuttil, 32nd in 43.26,  Julian Norton (having done a 10k race in the morning), 39th in 44.15,  Stephan Tomaszewski 40th in 44.29,  Rob Burn 44th in 45.25,  Marc Davies 76th in 50.53, Martyn Coy 78th in 51.08 and Hywel Smith 87th in 55.09.

The Muddy Boots 10k Race (actually more than 10k)  took place at Ripon in the morning over a course which very much lived up to its name in places, but just managed to escape the heavy rain which had been falling an hour earlier.  The wind was ever present, though, and the aforementioned Julian Norton had another excellent run to come 23rd out of the 443 finishers in 43.45, with Rob Lickley 39th in 46.37,  newish young member Liam Atkinson 49th in 47.43,  Mandy Capell 185th in 57.42,  Steve Scott 193rd in 58.11,  Stuart Waters 195th in 58.13,  Katy Gill, in her first outing for the club, 231st in 60.55,  Lisa Brown 342nd 70.31 and Lynne Jackson 374th in 73.23.

Alan Harman tackled the tough, hilly, Liversedge Half Marathon, one of his regular races, where, again, it was bitterly cold and very windy, and finished 331st – in his slowest ever time for the distance – in 2.02.31.

The previous weekend, 20 harriers were involved in another club championship race, the difficult and muddy Broughton Woods Wobble Fell race with snow and strong wind on the top. New member Peter Hunt had a very impressive run to come 15th in 46.17, with  Stephan Tomaszeski 16th, and 1st M50,  in 46.30,  Cameron Choules 17th in 47.05,  Paul Atkinson 35th in 50.10,   Marc Davies 51st in 53.12, Lorraine Hiles 56th, and 2nd F45, in 53.40,  David Read 58th in 53.50,  Graham Robinson 71st in 55.40,  Rob Lickley 81st in 57.25,  Carol Morrison 87th in 59.05,  Hywel Smith 91st in 60.20,  Hilary Coventry 94th in 61.26,  Alan Rylance 97th in 63.00,  Geoff Bullock 104th in 64.30,  Pat Kirby 106th, and 1st F60, in 65.20,  Steve Scott 107th in 66.00,  Bryan Miller, struggling with injury, 108th in 66.10,  Faith Coy 118th in 74.19,  Alan Wikeley 119th in 74.20,  Claire Gillan 120th in 74.24 and David Goddard 121st and given the same time as Claire.
