It Gets Sultry At Cock Howe And Beyond

The Cock Howe and beyond Fell Race, race8 in the summer series, attracted a field of 78 runners, of which 3 were Thirsk and Sowerby members, tackling the race which begins with a very steep climb.  It was a sultry evening with constant refreshing rain and Lorraine Hiles finished 48th, and 2nd F45, in 59.50  with Alan Wikeley 68th, and 2nd M65, in 69.37 and  Fran Jeffery 70th in 70.03.
Noel Clough and Pete Wilkin competed in the recent Hawkswick Dash Fell Race, over a very steep and short 1.2 mile course, with Noel coming 23rd in 14.07 and Pete 27th, and 1st M50, in 14.50.  Another of their outings was to the Duddon Valley in the Lake District at Seathwaite over 18 miles, which involved 7000 feet of climb including several summits. This was followed by a plunge to The Three Shires Stones and more climbs before a dash back to Seathwaite, theoretically!  The weather was fine to start with, but part way through the race, a clag came down, and both runners went off course following an error off a summit, and instead of finishing about 35th, they ended up in the 60’s out of a field of about 100.
Graham Robinson had no such problems at the Victorian 10k at Saltburn and had another excellent run to finish 45th out of 178 in a time of 42.10.
Ian and Marian Codling had their annual trip to the Idle Trail Race,a lovely run of about 6.4 miles, partly along the Leeds Liverpool Canal towpath before taking off into the countryside with plenty of undulations!  Ian was 226th in 69.01 and Marian 243rd in 77.16.
