Harriers Turn Up The Heat At Melmerby

An enthusiastic group of members were among the 199 finishers of the popular rural and reasonably level Melmerby 10k at the weekend, on a morning which was really too warm for running.  In spite of the heat, there were some personal best times for club entrants in the race which is event 3 in the Yorkshire Dales Series.  Phil Utley continued his superb vein of form to come 8th, and 3rd M40, in an excellent time of 37.02, with Steve Middleton 10th in 37.26. Stephan Tomaszewski was also among the prizewinners, finishing 16th, and 3rd M50, in 38.14.  Dan Holdsworth and Walter Busuttil had a close tussle throughout, with Dan getting 19th place in 38.29 and Walter 20th in 38.38.  Graham Robinson, another runner flying just now, came 43rd in 41.36,  Paul Atkinson 63rd in 43.36,  Matt Jones 67th in a very good personal best time of 43.50,  Les Sutton-Haigh 81st in 45.43,  Sue Busuttil 83rd in 46.02,  Nik Sutton-Haigh 111th in 48.49, another massive personal best, given the same time as Paul Goacher in a fight to the finish!  Hilary Coventry, ever competitive and ever improving, 131st in 52.19,  Ian Codling 178th in 60.49, just pipping Cath Lumb, 179th in 60.54,  Sarah Goacher 186th in 66.12,  Marian Codling 188th in 67.18 and Andrea Potter 194th in 71.45.
On the same morning, Alan Harman was finding it equally hot for the beautiful Raby Castle 10k over a scenic 2-lap course.  He took just over 54 minutes to complete the course.
There were 54 finishers in the recent Levisham Limping Fell Race, race 2 in the summer series.  There were the expected stiff climbs but with conditions firm an fast undefoot, it was an ideal evening for running.  Pete Wilkin came in 19th in 54.03 and Lorraine Hiles, one of only five ladies in the race, 45th in 62.40.
