Harriers Race For Their Supper

Thirsk and Sowerby was the host club for the latest Harrogate League fixture last week, and a massive 326 runners took part on a very pleasant evening, beginning on the Flatts and running round the lanes of Sowerby, a distance just short of 6 miles. A record 34 Harriers competed, with Phil Utley continuing his excellent form to lead club members home, finishing 18th in 32.00.  Stephan Tomaszewski was next, 28th in 33.13 with Julian Norton, always competitive, 34th in 33.32, Paul Atkinson 64th in 35.28,  Walter Busuttil 65th in 35.37,  Merv Burn 80th in 36.35,  Matt Jones 89th in 37.07,  just pipping Rob Burn 90th in 37.08,  Kris Gilbert, a welcome new young runner, 160th in 40.52, Nicola Booth 167th in 41.12,  Geoff Bullock 180th in 41.39,  David Shorrocks 191st in 42.09,  Paul Goacher 202nd in 42.39,  Helen Ashworth 208th in 43.15,  Hilary Coventry 221st in 43.50,  Fiona Needham 226th in 44.07,  Pat Kirby 238th in 45.07,  Ellie Pattinson, in her first ever race, 265th in 47.52,  Clare Goacher 266th in 47.54,  David Goddard 269th in 48.07,  Chris Sykes 279th in 49.01,  Phillip Craig 286th in 49.37,  Christine Burn 290th in 50.04,  Richard Easby 302nd in 50.57, Cath Lumb 304th in 51.15,  Sue Reynard 309th in 52.06,  Janet Balmain 312th in 53.04,  Lyn Jackson 313th 53.07,  Ian Codling 314th in 53.11,Sarah Goacher 317th in 54.47,  Andrea Potter 321st in 59.35,  Marian Codling 322nd in 60.14,  Sinead Kingham, another first timer, 324th in 61.01 and Pat Huck, getting back into running mode after a lay-off, 326th in 64.01.  Runners returned to Thirsk Athletic Club for a delicious supper laid on by the members of Sowerby WI.  A big thankyou to them, and to all the members who marshalled , and set up the course, so others could run.
The Yorkshire 10k took place at Newby Hall at the weekend, with the course having to be altered to 2 x 5k laps because of difficult conditions underfoot for the original and usual course.  On a fine,breezy morning, there were 386 finishers, with Alan Harman coming 115th in 51.32,  Ian Codling 303rd in 63.12, and Martin and Faith Coy – Faith in her first ever race – 333rd in 65.12.
A couple of weeks previously,  Noel Clough and Pete Wilkin took part in the Sedbergh Gala Fell Race over 2.6 miles with some stiff climbs. Noel came 20th in 24.03 and Pete 26th in 24.59 out of about 75 finishers.
