Day Out In Somerset To A Yorkshire Rat Race

Rob Burn took part in the Rat Race Yorkshire Terrier 10k in the lovely setting of Newburgh Priory.  This was a first for this race in this setting, and a warm sunny evening meant the start of the race had to be delayed as it has to take place in the dark!  540 runners set off from the start, and a mile into the race, Rob lost his head torch in the cargo netting – which was covering about a foot of mud and water.  There were obstacles to be got over and under, and not all on trails, and Rob completed the course in a marvellous 56 minutes, 21st finisher and 1st V50.  He declared it to be the hardest and the most fun race he had ever done!
Three Harriers were at Harewood for the AgeUK Wrap up and Run10k charity run, and, as always at Harewood, the were some long, hard climbs.  There were almost 1200 finishers, and some of the “fun runners” must have found it especially hard.  Alan Harman completed the course in 53.55 minutes, with Ian Codling taking 65.31 and Marian Codling 74.13.  The fact that it was a beautiful morning must have helped the runners round!
Junior runner, Jack Spence, was part of a team representing North Yorkshire Schools at Ilton in Somerset for a cross country race.  After some interference at the start of the race, Jack was able to make up some lost ground and finished a very good 171st out of 330 runners, whetting his appetite for more of the same in the future!

Thirsk 10
The annual Thirsk 10 Road Race takes place at the weekend, on March 25th, and the usual high class field is expected.  It is not too late to enter, and entries can be taken on the day.  The main race, based at Thirsk Racecourse, begins at 11 am and runners over 16 of all abilities are welcome – the mainly flat course lends itself to a personal-best time.  It starts on Newsham Road, round by Sandhutton and Busby Stoop before finishing on the racecourse.  For those not up to running 10 miles, a Fun Run begins at 10 am, and this is completely off-road and in the region of 2 miles.  Again, entries can be taken on the day.  Full details can be found on the club website at  www.thirskandsowerbyharriers.co.uk      Do come and give it a try!
